2007 Awards Banquet

The 2006-2007 Sumter County 4-H Youth Awards Banquet was held on Saturday, September 22. The evening began with a welcome from Miss Candy Munz, 4-H Council President, Sarah Hensley, 4-H Extension Agent, and Colleen Martin, County Council Advisor. The South Sumter High School ROTC posted the colors and Sheriff Bill Farmer sang the Star Spangled Banner. This year Mrs. Hensley had the county council officers to preside over the evening events with each council officer having a part in the program. The 4-H pledge was led by C. J. Costanza, Sergeant at Arms; 4-H emblem recited by Kaycee Barco, Vice president; 4-H colors and motto by Kenneth Gatlin, outgoing treasurer; 4-H Creed by Emily Weed, District Delegate and the blessing by Brittani Grady, Reporter. The guest speaker was Shane McWilliams, State 4-H Council President and he was introduced by Tiffany Maddox, Alternate District Delegate. Shane spoke to the 4-H members about keeping accurate record books and getting more involved with your own 4-H experience. Other 4-H council members who participated in the awards program are: Stephanie Arnold, Secretary; Coral Knight, Treasurer; Haley Neese, Parliamentarian; and Sidney Helms, Sergeant at Arms.

After a wonderful dinner catered by Tim and Amy Weed, the remainder of the evening was dedicated to honoring all outstanding 4-H members. Youth awards included club and individual awards. Each 4-H club was called to the stage to receive their awards. Sumter County 4-H clubs include: All in One, All That and More, BEST Explorers, Horsin' Around, Muckateers, Skylimit, South Sumter Livestock, South Sumter Shooting Sports, Sumter Saddle Ups, Windsong Riders and Friends and WINGS.

The Outstanding Project Book Awards were given to: for Beef - Junior, Jake Mayo; Intermediate, Coral Knight; senior, Stephanie Arnold. For swine - junior, Robert Daves; intermediate, Christian Keen; senior, Samantha Daves. For horse - junior, Kendall Clark; intermediate, Mary Kathleen Bowers; senior, Stephanie Arnold. For dairy - junior, Austin Harness; intermediate, Christian Keen; senior, Tiffany Maddox. For small animal, Rebecca Morrell. Each 4-her received a special belt buckle as their award in each area.

Also being recognized for outstanding work were those members who turned in a Secretary, Treasurer and Historian record book. The evening ended with the awards for the Outstanding 4-H members. The winners were: Jake Mayo, junior, sponosred by Gloria Haywood; Rebecca Morrell, intermediate, sponsored by the Munz Family; and Kaycee Barco, senior, sponsored by Todd Ranch.

To learn more about 4-H your are invited to come out to the Fairgrounds on Saturday, October 6 for a 4-H Open House. Each club in Sumter County will have booths set up to showcase their members and activities. You may also contact Mrs. Sarah Hensley, 4-H Extension Agent.
